Mentzinger targets the gag reflex

News release: Mentzinger departs Times Record for campaign season (March 31, 2014)

BRUNSWICK

Bob Mentzinger announced today he has departed the top newsroom role at The Times Record to restart his public relations firm in the run-up to the 2014 elections.

“This is a unique year in Maine politics and several candidates have reached out,” Mentzinger said. “It’s going to be exciting.”

Through his PR firm Writing Maine, Mentzinger served as media adviser to Cynthia Dill, a state senator from Cape Elizabeth who captured the Democratic nomination for U.S. Senate in a statewide election in 2012. Other clients have included MaineShare, Friends of the Maine Woods and Breathable Home, a small home energy-efficiency contractor.

Recognized last year by the Maine Press Association as the best editorial writer in Maine in 2012-13, Mentzinger was elected to his local school board in 2012 and was mentioned as a future Democratic candidate in former Maine House District 83 in 2013.

His departure caps a 17-year newspaper career that began as a news aide at The Washington Post while in college in 1986. In Maine, his 10 years of day-to-day newsroom management included a wide-ranging Kennebec Journal investigation that implicated a small-town municipal official and her husband in contract rigging, misuse of federal funds and extortion, leading to federal corruption indictments. He also wrote an award-winning column on Maine’s ski industry for two years and coached two of the last three Maine Press Association Bob Drake Award winners recognizing the best young journalist in the state.

“Newspapers continue to be an important community touchstone, and Times Record readers are some of the best-informed, most influential people in Maine,” Mentzinger said. “It’s my great hope the company and the industry survives what continues to be an extremely difficult financial environment.”
