Thoreau: today’s inspiration

   Henry David Thoreau (1817-1862)

Maybe you noticed this “quote of the day” from Thoreau in our side bar area, maybe you didn’t:

Most of the luxuries, and many of the so-called comforts of life, are not only not indispensable, but positive hindrances to the elevation of mankind.

It’s well known that Thoreau is an inspiration and demi-God to many in our area of the country, including many in our region, state, and town.  It could even be said that he’s a founding father of the environmental/naturalist movement.

So we come to remind you that the very self same Thoreau also voiced this famous truism:

That government is best which governs least.

Many who claim to idolize him and his naturalist tendencies may find this ‘inconvenient.’

Regardless, we don’t believe anyone can say with a straight face and clear conscience that our municipal, state, and particularly federal governments are ‘governing least.’  In fact, the reality is they’re doing exactly the opposite.

Don’t like our view?  Deal with it, because it’s the truth.

Have a nice evening.
